Update!!!!
Funds
from Northpark Capital Campaign have been received at Tumutumu Hospital
in Kenya for the setup of the Eye Clinic! Expected completion date for
the clinic is Summer 2012. When complete – the hospital expects to
serve more than 1000 patients per month offering treatment for
cataracts, general eye ailments and infections, cornea deficits,
glaucoma, retina conditions, and vision correction.
Blindness and
poor vision have significant economic impacts on those afflicted and on
the social fabric of communities. Besides limiting a person’s ability
to work, children and other relatives of those afflicted are consigned
to be caretakers – limiting their access to employment and education.
There is also a well established link between poor eye health and mental
health.
The $50,000 from Northpark will go towards building the
clinic. MEDS for Africa is developing a fund to help retain a full time
ophthalmologist and nurses for this clinic.
