Lenten Devotionals 2016

Maker of Heaven and Earth

My favorite image of God is God the Creator. I imagine swirls of color and stars shooting from God's hands as they mold the skies, planets, oceans, and then holy fingers shaping the tiny details of fish, trees, animals, and humans, like a sculptor or a painter.

Genesis 1 tells us, on the first day God creates light and time itself starts to tick away.

The second day brings the waters and it's from the waters that our Creator makes the sky.

On the third day the shapeless waters take form and become the seas, and on them is formed the land, and the land itself begins to spring to life with grass and plants.

When the fourth day arrives God makes reigns in the darkness to become the night and creates stars, sun, and moon.

On the fifth day we are gifted with the birds in the air and the fish that swim in the ocean.

And on the sixth day the animals that roam the land, and then at last, God says,

"Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.'

So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

God blessed them, and God said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth."

And after each of these marvelous creations, God proclaimed them "Good." Have you ever made something and been impressed with your own work? I imagine that's how God felt. God looks at everything, blinks, smiles, and thinks, "I did a good job!"

But if you read closely, when God gazes upon the humans – the creatures created in God's own image – God declares them "very good."

Very. Good. Really, go look it up if you don't believe me. The stars are lovely, the sun gives light and life to an entire planet, the oceans roar with unimaginable power, yet the thing that God is really impressed with is you.

You are very good. You are impressive. You are made by God. Each time we affirm that God is our creator, we name our own value in God's eyes. Don't forget your "very goodness."

God, you created us. You made us specifically and each of us for your purpose. You think we are wonderful. There will be times when we forget. There will be times when we don't believe that you've named us "very good." Remind us Lord, when we don't believe. Hold us close. Whisper in our ears your love for us, so we can live into our "goodness" and eternal promise. Amen.
