Advent Devotional: December 9
An Advent Litany
based upon Isaiah 11, Psalm 72, and the Advent hymn "O Come, O Come Emmanuel"
A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
From His roots a Branch will bear fruit.
O come, thou Root of Jesse, free thine own from Satan's tyranny;
From depths of hell thy people save and give them victory o'er the grave.
Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds.
The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him –
The Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
The Spirit of counsel and of power,
The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord –
And he will delight in the fear of the Lord.
O come, thou Wisdom from on high, who orderest all things mightily;
To us the path of knowledge show;
And teach us in her ways to go.
Praise be to his glorious name forever.
The wolf will live with the lamb,
The leopard will lie down with goat,
The calf and the lion and the yearling together;
And a little child will lead them.
O come, Desire of nations,
Bind all peoples in one heart and mind;
Bid envy, strife, and discord cease;
Fill the whole world with heaven's peace.
May the whole earth be filled with his glory.
In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples;
The nations will rally to him,
And his place of rest will be glorious.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
