12.16 Advent Devotional
Today's Advent Devotional, on Isaiah 9:6, is written by Tom Byrne.

For a child has been born for us,
a son given to us;
authority rests upon his shoulders;
and he is named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
There is so much going on in this verse, when I first read it, my head spun.
Child. Son. Counselor. God. Father. Prince.
So many different images and concepts of one being and all the same at once. Am I, are we, all like that? I am a father and son, worker and citizen at one time and someone totally different at others.
I like seeing things in two dimensions, it's just easier. But when I let myself go beyond those simple constraints, the richness of life that God gave us opens up.
I understand why my children don't act the way I would like them to. I accept challenges in my life when I hadn't planned for them. And I appreciate God's love sometimes more when it comes in an unexpected form – a child with authority on his shoulders – a Counselor, Father, and Prince of Peace.
We are yours, O Lord.
